Baby's First Christmas Mini Session in Toronto (2026)

There are two clocks running with a new baby. One is the calendar — your baby's first Christmas happens exactly once. The other is faster: babies change every few weeks, so the tiny person you have right now won't be here next December. A baby's first Christmas mini session catches that exact version before it's gone. I'm Jo — I photograph Christmas mini sessions and newborns across Toronto and the GTA — and first-Christmas babies are some of my favourite twenty minutes of the whole season.

Is a mini session good for a baby?

For most babies, yes — with one honest note. A mini is short: 20 minutes, versus an hour or more for a full session. So there's less time to wait out a long fuss than there would be in a full sitting. The good news is that the short, low-pressure format actually suits a lot of babies, and I work gently and efficiently to make the most of every minute — I'm always trying to get as much as I can in the time we have. Come with your baby fed and rested if you can, and we'll get beautiful frames. If your little one tends to need a lot of settling, a full session gives more breathing room, and I'm happy to point you that way.

How I photograph first-Christmas babies

My style is documentary — candid and gentle, not stiff and posed. I'd rather catch your baby gazing at the tree lights, gripping your finger, or that half-second before a giggle than force a setup. I'll give you enough direction that you never feel lost — how to hold them, where to sit, what to do with your hands — then I let the real moment happen. My background is in weddings (Fearless Photographers and WPJA member), and I bring that same eye for genuine moments to a baby's first Christmas.

Which studio is best for a baby?

All three of my studios are warm and baby-friendly, but the soft, even light at Glasshouse Studios in Richmond Hill (the Amalia and Sophia rooms) is especially flattering for little ones — no harsh glare, natural skin tones, and elegant sets that photograph beautifully. (Inside the Sophia Room here.) My Toronto (Icon) and Brampton (Ruby Manor) studios work just as well — pick the location and look you love.

A few tips for a smooth first-Christmas session

  • Come a little early and relaxed — a calm parent makes for a calm baby.

  • Bring the essentials — a bottle, a soother, a spare outfit, and a favourite small toy.

  • Time it around naps and feeds if you can — a fed, rested baby is a happy baby.

  • Keep outfits soft and simple — cream, oatmeal, sage or a small touch of red. Here's my full what-to-wear guide.

  • Bring the grandparents — first-Christmas photos with grandparents are the ones families treasure most.

Turn it into a tradition

Here's the lovely part: a first-Christmas mini is also Year One. Book the same styled session each December and you'll have a growing record of your child — a completely different little person each year, same warm style. Many of my families start exactly this way. (More on why it becomes a tradition.)
