Your Baby's First Home: In-Home Family Photography in Toronto
For a lot of families, two of the biggest chapters land in the same year. The baby arrives, and so does the new place. Maybe you moved before the birth so there'd be a nursery. Maybe you moved after, because a one-bedroom stopped working the day the stroller came home. Either way, you end up here: a home that is brand new to you, filled with a person who is brand new to the world.
And then the strangest thing happens. You get so deep into the sleep schedules and the daycare lists and the ordinary Tuesday mornings that you forget you're living inside a chapter. One that is going to close.
You will not live here forever. The kitchen where they banged the pots. The exact corner of the couch they learned to pull up on. The light that comes through your living room at ten in the morning. That's a real place, and right now it's yours, and in a few years it will only exist in whatever you managed to keep of it.
That's the whole reason we photograph families at home.
A Morning in this Unionville Apartment
This session started on the kitchen floor, which is where most of them start. This cutie had the entire pot collection out before we'd taken our jackets off. Dad crouched down to negotiate. Mom leaned against the counter and watched it happen, the way you do when you're too tired to intervene and it's too funny to stop.
Nobody arranged that. We just showed up during a normal morning and stayed out of the way while it started.
After that it was the living room, and the couch, and a board book all three of them leaned into. Mom singing into a lamp like a microphone, which got the loudest reaction of the day. And then the kitchen again, and a banana, which a one-year-old found so genuinely hilarious that both parents lost it. We won't oversell the banana. But that frame is the one they'll print, and it's the kind of thing you cannot schedule.
The Window Is Smaller Than Parents Think
This is the part we'd gently push on, because we see it constantly.
Parents plan to book "once things settle down." Things do not settle down. What actually happens is that the baby changes shape every six weeks, and one day you look up and the one who crawled toward you across that couch is a four-year-old who does not sit still, in a different house, and the version of your family you meant to photograph is gone.
Two clocks are running at the same time, and both of them are faster than they feel:
Your baby's clock. Four to twelve months is extraordinary for this, sitting up, reacting, not yet running. First birthdays are a natural marker. But every single stage is worth one morning
Your home's clock. Most Toronto families outgrow their first place with a baby in it within a few years. The condo, the rental, the starter semi. It's temporary and it never feels temporary while you're in it
You don't need both clocks to be perfect. You need to catch them while they overlap.
Why at Home, and Not a Studio or a Park
A studio gives you a clean backdrop. A park gives you nice light. Your home gives you the actual story, and it removes almost everything that makes family sessions hard with a baby:
No travel. No car seat, no getting everyone out the door, no arriving already frazzled
Naps and feeds still happen. We build the session around your schedule instead of fighting it
Your baby behaves like your baby. Familiar room, familiar toys, no strangers-in-a-park energy
Toronto weather stops mattering. Not a small thing
Everything in the frame means something. The high chair, the board books, the balloon still up from the party, the view out your window
And you get the rooms themselves. Years from now, that's the part that surprises people most. Not just how small your baby was, but how your home looked when it was new to you.
But My House Is a Mess, and We're Not Photogenic
The two things every parent says before booking. Honestly:
The mess is the point. Tidy the living room and the kitchen if it makes you comfortable. Leave the toys. A living room with nothing in it isn't your home, it's a showroom, and it will photograph like one.
You don't have to perform. We're a husband-and-wife team, Tess and Jo, not a photographer barking directions from behind a tripod. We're documentary photographers, recognized by Fearless Photographers and the WPJA for exactly this kind of unposed work. Mostly we stay out of your way. One of us gets low and close at your baby's level, the other stays wide and catches what you two do when you think nobody's looking. That second angle is why the photos of you end up being the ones you love.
Your condo isn't too small. We've shot beautiful sessions in one-bedrooms. One or two rooms with a window is genuinely all we need.
How to Prepare (It's Not Much)
Tidy the main rooms only. Living room, kitchen, one bedroom
Open all the curtains and turn the lamps off. Natural light does the work
Dress simply. Soft neutrals, creams, denim, no big logos
Book around the good nap, usually mid-morning
Have one normal activity in your back pocket: bath time, a favourite book, snacks
Don't clean up the toys halfway through. That's the photo
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Usually one to two hours. With a baby we'd rather have the extra time than rush a feed or a nap.
-
Any age is worth it, but four to twelve months is a lovely window, and first birthdays are a natural moment. If you've just moved, book while the home still feels new to you.
-
No. We've worked in small condos and older homes with modest windows. One or two rooms with natural light is enough. We also bring professional lighting in case we need to brighten things up.
-
hen we photograph that too, and then we wait. It always passes. Babies who are upset in a park stay upset. Babies at home reset in ten minutes.

Yes. See our newborn photography and birthday sessions, and our family photography page for everything else.

Yes, across the GTA including Markham, Mississauga, Scarborough, Vaughan and Etobicoke.

It depends on length and whether you'd like video as well, since we shoot both. Send us your neighbourhood and your baby's age and we'll come back with details.
